Melbourne transfers for delegates, crews and event crowds

Melbourne gives a group two airports, a CBD where buses stop only briefly and three cashless tollways. The schedule works when every pickup has a named bay and a time limit attached.

Tullamarine or Avalon

From Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine) to Flinders Street Station is about 28 km, roughly half an hour when the Tullamarine Freeway and the CityLink tollway are clear. Buses work there under an airport permit, issued once the operator registers in the online Bus Account System, and they load in the Groups and Charters Permit Area shown on that permit. Dwell times are capped and a bus may not be left unattended, so the driver arrives close to the group's exit time rather than at touchdown.

Avalon (AVV) sits some 56 km out, so allow about 50 minutes to Southern Cross Station; for larger groups, collection there is negotiated with the airport, so send the flight details early.

The fifteen-minute kerb

City of Melbourne bus spaces are signed No Stopping, with an exception for buses stopping less than 15 minutes to pick up or drop off. That is enough to load a group already waiting on the footpath and little more. Loading Zones allow up to 30 minutes unless signed otherwise; No Parking areas allow 2 minutes with the driver within 3 metres of the bus. Longer layover is only in designated areas outside the CBD, mapped by the council with their hours.

Hook turns shape the loop too: where a sign says "Right turn from left only", the right turn is made from the left lane. Brief delegates to be at the hotel door on the minute.

Stadium and racecourse days

The MCG in Yarra Park, Marvel Stadium at Docklands, Rod Laver Arena at Melbourne Park, Flemington and the Albert Park circuit all draw crowds that reshape traffic around them. Book early, agree the set-down within the venue's traffic arrangements, and give guests one meeting point for the return.

Regional legs

Geelong is an hour away, as is Healesville in the Yarra Valley; Phillip Island takes about two. For the Penguin Parade, the group should be on site roughly an hour ahead of the birds reaching the beach, with cameras packed away. The Twelve Apostles need an advance booking for the main viewing precinct once the new visitor centre opens, and coaches that book are given a bus bay; at about 3 hours each way inland, the day must fit the driver's work and rest hours.

Questions

Which airport suits a Melbourne conference?

Tullamarine for most schedules, at about 30 minutes to the CBD in light traffic. Avalon is about 50 minutes and works when the group's flights use it.

Does the coach pay tolls on CityLink?

Yes. All three Melbourne tollways (CityLink, EastLink, West Gate Tunnel) are cashless, with a separate class for heavy commercial vehicles. The operator handles the charges and the quote shows the route.

Can a group travel on to Tasmania from Melbourne?

The Spirit of Tasmania sails from North Geelong, about an hour away, and changes to new vessels in late 2026. Check sailings first; groups book the crossing through its group travel team.
