Gold Coast Airport (OOL): transit bays, holding area and the border clock

Gold Coast Airport is set up for group vehicles, with a bank of angled transit bays beside the terminal and a holding area off May Bradford Drive. The catch is approval: an operator not registered with the airport needs a casual access booking approved and paid ahead of the day, or the vehicle is turned away at entry.

Holding first, then the transit bays

The vehicle holds in the airport's Ground Transport Holding Area, reached by turning left into May Bradford Drive, alongside the taxi and rideshare holding. When the group nears the exit it moves up to the GT Transit Area: angled bays ringing the turning circle where Terminal Drive ends. Nothing may park outside the terminal itself, and the kerb serves only immediate pickups and drop-offs.

Domestic and international flights share the one terminal, so staggered arrivals all come out through the same doors. That makes a rolling shuttle simple: one vehicle leaves when full while the next is already holding.

Registration and approvals

Registered operators carry the airport's RFID sticker and have fees taken from a prepaid account as they leave. They also hold operator accreditation plus motor vehicle and public liability insurance at the levels the airport sets. For a one-off job, an unregistered operator applies for casual access instead. Ask the quote to confirm which route applies.

Transfer time to the CBD

  • about 22 km by road to Cavill Mall, Surfers Paradise, about 30 min in light traffic

Terminals

  • Single terminal (domestic and international)

Two states, two clocks

The airport sits on the Queensland-New South Wales border. Queensland does not use daylight saving and NSW does, so from early October to early April, Tweed Heads and Byron Bay run an hour ahead of the Gold Coast. For a retreat south of the border, state the time zone beside every time on the run sheet.

North to Surfers and Broadbeach

Surfers Paradise, measured to Cavill Mall, is roughly 22 km north. A replacement coach interchange is being built on the Cypress Palms car park site through 2026, and the former transit centre shut in late 2025, so confirm each hotel set-down rather than relying on either. The convention centre is at Broadbeach.

Questions

Could the group fly into Brisbane instead?

It can, but that adds about 85 km and upwards of an hour on the road, and the Gateway route crosses the tolled Sir Leo Hielscher Bridges.

Is there a public option for one late traveller?

Public bus 777 runs from the airport to the G:link tram at Broadbeach South, a workable fallback for one person who misses the group vehicle.

What details does the operator need?

Flight numbers, headcount, bags, surfboards or sports gear, the hotel addresses, and whether any stop is across the border.
