Launceston group transport and northern Tasmania connections

Launceston is the hub for groups working northern Tasmania. The airport is 15 to 20 minutes out, the ferry port about an hour and a quarter, and the national parks further. Each has access rules that set the timetable.

Commercial lane at the airport

Launceston Airport (LST) is about 15 km by road from the Town Hall. Buses pick up in the Commercial Lane closest to the terminal, entered through a boom gate that reads the plate. Each vehicle needs its own permit, and bus operators must be accredited with Transport Services Tasmania. There is no published coach holding area and the public frontage allows a one-minute stop, so pickups are timed to the group being ready.

Hobart Airport is about 200 km away, two and a half to three hours on the Midland Highway. Some tour groups land in one and fly out of the other; the quote treats each transfer as a separate job.

Meeting the ferry at Devonport

Devonport is a 100 km run, about 75 minutes. Late 2026 brings Spirit of Tasmania a fresh pair of vessels and a relocated terminal at the Devonport end, so check the sailing schedule before the transfer is locked in. Terminal parking is for passengers only and limited; the pickup has to be arranged in advance. Groups book their crossing through the ferry's group enquiries.

Park days with fixed rules

While the park shuttle operates at Cradle Mountain, the Visitor Centre is as far as private vehicles go. Dove Lake holds just three first-come bays for tour operators, who drive in and out behind a shuttle escort during shuttle hours; at peak times they are asked to leave the vehicle at the Gateway and ride the shuttle. Every passenger needs a Tasmanian parks pass. Each way, Cradle takes 2 to 2.5 hours and Freycinet about 2.5, so both days must sit inside Heavy Vehicle National Law driving limits, which apply in Tasmania.

In town, Cataract Gorge has 12 oversized-vehicle bays at First Basin, and the gates lock at 10pm. For an evening function, walking from the city via Kings Bridge in about 15 minutes avoids the car park.

Questions

Can we add a Tamar Valley winery stop?

Yes. The wine route runs along both banks of the Tamar River, close to the city. Book tastings for the group and send the times, and the transfer is built around them.

Is the stadium at Invermay running at full capacity?

Not during the 2026 upgrade works, when capacity is limited. Check the event's arrangements before planning a large group.

When is the lavender in flower at Bridestowe?

December and January. The estate is about 50 km north-east, roughly 45 minutes.
