Geelong group transfers for conferences, ferries and the coast

Geelong has its own airport 25 minutes out, a new waterfront convention centre and the Tasmanian ferry at the docks. Each has different timing rules; plan the transfers around them rather than around the map.

Avalon or Tullamarine

From Avalon to Geelong City Hall is roughly 24 km, or 25 to 30 minutes, all of it on the toll-free Princes Freeway. Buses use the airport's Bus Zone only for as long as it takes to load, and Avalon publishes no coach holding area. Larger groups and charter tours agree their pickup arrangements with the airport in advance, which the operator does once the flight details are confirmed.

Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine) is about 85 km away, one hour to an hour and a quarter. It suits delegates on international connections. For a run into the Melbourne CBD, any bus seating 13 or more is billed at the heavy commercial rate on the cashless tollways, and the West Gate Freeway charge applies whether the driver takes the tunnel or the bridge.

Conference movements on the waterfront

Nyaal Banyul opened in mid-2026 with a 1,000-seat theatre and a hotel attached. Delegates staying next door walk; everyone else needs a morning inbound loop and a timed evening return from the central and Eastern Beach hotels. Send the program so pickups match session start times, not the registration opening.

The National Wool Museum has bus parking out front on Moorabool Street, one block from the water, which makes it an easy add-on for a partner program.

Connecting with the Spirit of Tasmania

Sailings depart overnight from North Geelong (Spirit of Tasmania Quay, Corio Quay Road), and the crossing takes roughly nine to eleven hours. The service is moving to new ships in late 2026, so confirm sailing times before fixing a transfer. Groups book their passage through the ferry's group enquiries; the ground leg is then timed to check-in.

Coast days and their limits

Torquay is 25 minutes and Lorne about an hour and a quarter. The Twelve Apostles are a different proposition: 400 km or more there and back, which has to fit the driver's legal work and rest limits or become an overnight. Visitors to the main precinct must book once the new visitor centre opens, and tour vehicles receive a bay and an arrival slot. Book that slot before anything else.

Questions

Is Avalon or Melbourne Airport better for a Geelong event?

Avalon is about 25 to 30 minutes from the city; Tullamarine is about an hour or more. If the flights exist from the group's origin, Avalon shortens the day.

Can the group cross to Sorrento on the Queenscliff ferry?

Yes. Sailings run every hour between 7am and 6pm, about 40 minutes each way. A vehicle must be at check-in 40 minutes ahead, and reserving its space is advised on weekends and in school holidays.

How far is Ballarat from Geelong?

About 87 km, roughly an hour, which makes a Sovereign Hill afternoon workable after a morning session.
