Sunshine Coast Airport (MCY): Friendship Avenue pickups

Sunshine Coast Airport is compact. The Private Transfers zone is directly in front of the single terminal, and the region's main conference venue is about five minutes away. Most of the planning is about where the group goes next.

The meeting point

On the airport's transport map, Friendship Avenue carries the shuttle bus stop and a zone marked Private Transfers, right outside the terminal beside the kerbside pickup zone and the taxi rank. That is the point to put in joining instructions. No coach staging area is published, and the terminal zone allows immediate pickups and drop-offs, nothing longer. Vehicles cannot be left there; any left alone or overstaying are fined or towed.

For a host meeting someone by car, the first 10 minutes in Short Term parking and the first hour in Long Term cost nothing.

Twin Waters, Maroochydore, Noosa

Twin Waters, home of the Sunshine Coast Convention Centre, is roughly five minutes by road, so for a conference the transfer is shorter than the wait for bags. Maroochydore is a short run south. Noosa Heads is roughly 35 to 40 minutes on from Maroochydore, and at peak times the parking at Hastings Street and at the national park runs out, so plan a set-down and a pickup rather than parking.

Caloundra's Events Centre is the other large venue, taking between 20 and 1,750 delegates.

When Brisbane is the better airport

A large group may fly into Brisbane on bigger aircraft. The drive from Brisbane Airport is 105 to 110 km, 1.25 to 1.5 hours, which is worth it only if it saves splitting the group across several smaller flights.

Hinterland programs to Montville and Maleny use narrow, winding roads, so check the route with the operator before booking a full-size coach.

Questions

Is there a public bus for a delegate who misses the group?

Yes. Route buses stop on the loop road around the terminal, next to the Covered car park, only a few steps from the doors.

Can we visit Australia Zoo on arrival day?

Yes. Allow around half an hour from the airport; it is open 9am to 5pm, and its free car park fills in school holidays and at weekends.

What should we send?

Flights, headcount, bags, the resort or venue address, and any afternoon activity, so the vehicle and its hours are quoted together.
