Wheelchair-accessible minibuses for mixed-mobility groups

An accessible minibus has a lift or ramp and wheelchair restraint positions in place of some seats. The layout varies from vehicle to vehicle, so the booking starts with the group, not the brochure.

Layout is a trade-off

Each wheelchair position replaces seats and some luggage room. A vehicle set up for four chairs carries fewer walking passengers than one set up for two. Give the exact mix: how many travel in their chair, how many transfer to a seat, how many carers and how many bags. The operator then confirms the layout that matches.

Lift or ramp matters as well. A heavy powered chair may need a lift, and a ramp needs clear space at the kerb. State the chair type and the pickup location.

  • Luggage: Limited; wheelchair positions reduce luggage room

Standards and training

In NSW, each wheelchair space in an accessible booked vehicle must be at least 1,300 mm long, 800 mm wide and 1,500 mm high, and drivers of these hire vehicles must be competent at loading, unloading and transporting wheelchair passengers. The national Disability Standards cover buses used for a public transport service; for private hire the position is less clear, so the operator's written confirmation is the real check. A minibus of this size is driven on a light rigid licence.

Timing an accessible run

Allow time at every stop for the lift cycle and for securing each chair, and keep the number of stops down. For race days at Flemington, tram route 57 does not run low-floor trams and the organisers point mobility-aid users to the train, so a door-to-door accessible minibus is worth considering. For airport runs, give the airline and the operator the same arrival details so assistance and pickup line up.

Questions

How many wheelchairs can one minibus take?

It depends on the layout. Some carry one or two chairs with most seats kept; others carry more with fewer seats. The quote should state the number of positions.

Can a carer sit next to the wheelchair user?

Ask for it in the request. Layouts differ, and the operator confirms where carers sit.

What if the vehicle turns out unsuitable?

That is why the details go in before booking. If the chair size or the number of wheelchair users changes, tell us straight away so the operator can recheck the vehicle.
