Darwin group transfers and Top End day logistics
Darwin transfers are short; the Top End runs around them are not. Season, heat, park permits and crocodile country decide what a group can do on any given day.
Two minutes at the kerb
Smith Street Mall is some 11 km from the terminal at Darwin International Airport, around 15 minutes when traffic is light. It shares its runway with RAAF Base Darwin, and neither a coach pickup bay nor a holding area is published. The designated pick-up zones allow a two-minute wait at most, the driver must stay with the vehicle, and unattended vehicles are fined immediately. In practice the vehicle pulls in only once every passenger is outside with bags, so appoint someone in the group to phone the driver from the doors.

Waterfront conferences and evenings
The Darwin Convention Centre is in the Waterfront Precinct beside the CBD, minutes from the Mitchell Street and waterfront hotels. Evening functions need more thought. Mindil Beach Sunset Market trades on Thursday and Sunday evenings, 4 to 9 pm, between the last Thursday of April and the last Thursday of October, under 3 km from the centre with free parking off Gilruth Avenue. A dinner group can be set down there and collected at a fixed time.

Litchfield and Kakadu
Litchfield National Park is about 100 to 120 km via Batchelor, about 1.5 hours, and its main falls (Wangi, Florence, Buley Rockhole) are on two-wheel-drive roads. Jabiru in Kakadu is about 3 hours away via the Stuart Highway then the Arnhem Highway; refuel at Jabiru or Cooinda. Everyone except Territory residents needs a park pass, valid 7 days, and tours inside the park need a Kakadu permit or licence held by the tour operator.
The dry season runs about April to October and the wet about November to March, when flooding closes parts of the park; the operator checks the daily access report before each trip. Park rangers' heat advice: walk early or late, stay off the tracks between about 2.30 pm and 6.30 pm, and have each person drink a litre or more every hour. Estuarine crocodiles are present in most rivers, creeks and billabongs, so the group stays well clear of the water unless a sign says it is safe. The Territory applies its own fatigue regime to driver hours, not the national one.
Questions
Is Kakadu a day trip from Darwin?
It is about 3 hours each way to Jabiru, which leaves little time in the park. An overnight works better for most programs.
Are there tolls on Darwin transfers?
No. There are none anywhere in the Territory.
How far is the Territory Wildlife Park?
About 60 km south at Berry Springs, roughly 45 minutes. The Adelaide River crocodile cruises on the Arnhem Highway are about 50 minutes out.
