Full-size coaches for airport waves and event shuttles
A full-size coach moves a whole delegate wave, a year group or a touring party in one run, with luggage underneath. Its size is also its limit: it needs a kerb, a route and a legal place to wait.
When one coach beats several vans
For groups of about 40 or more, one coach means one pickup time, one driver to brief and one arrival at the venue. Plan with the seat number on the quote rather than a typical range. Suitcases go underneath on an airport run; hand baggage stays in the cabin.
Coach drivers hold a medium or heavy rigid licence and their state's bus driver authority or accreditation. A coach is a fatigue-regulated heavy vehicle, so outside WA and the NT the driver works to Heavy Vehicle National Law hours: no more than 12 hours' work in any 24, with 7 continuous hours of rest. Western Australia and the Northern Territory set their own rules.

Where a coach cannot go
Height and length close some doors. The multi-storey car park at Scenic World stops anything taller than 2 m, which leaves coaches setting down on Violet Street. Sydney's tolled motorways charge most full-size coaches as Class B heavy vehicles, and a coach exceeding those Class B thresholds (12.5 m long, 2.8 m tall) must use NorthConnex between the M1 and the M2 instead of Pennant Hills Road.
Some routes are simply unsuitable. The Mereenie Loop to Kings Canyon is unsealed and recommended for 4WD only, so coaches take the sealed highways. Signs on the Wallaman Falls road from Ingham rule out buses altogether.
Airport and terminal access
Airports treat a coach as a registered commercial vehicle. At Sydney Kingsford Smith, each coach needs a registered e-tag to open the boom gates, and every bus service must be pre-booked. At Brisbane's cruise terminal, anything over 6.5 m uses the Coach & Shuttle Area. The operator holds these registrations, and the quote confirms which airport or terminal access is included.
Questions
Do coaches have seat belts?
Heavy coaches made since mid-1994 fall under the ADR 68 standard, route buses aside. Ask for the build year and belt fit of the assigned coach.
How much luggage fits underneath?
The bays are large but not unlimited. Send the number and size of bags, and declare bikes, golf bags or equipment cases separately.
Is a coach too big for 30 people?
Not always. With heavy luggage, a coach may carry the load better than a midi coach. If the venue kerb is tight, the midi may be easier.
