Adelaide Airport (ADL): a short run and a strict kerb

Adelaide is a short transfer: Victoria Square is only about 7 km from the terminal. That leaves the airport end as the part that needs planning, because where a group meets its vehicle depends on the size of that vehicle.

Coaches use the bus and shuttle area

Anything over 2.2 m high or 5.4 m long, which rules out the P1 Terminal Car Park, goes to the bus and shuttle area, located at the south end of the public pickup and drop-off zone. Its conditions of use are posted at the entry, and fees apply. No coach holding area is published; the boom-gated Layoff Area near the western entrance is described for taxis, rideshare and chauffeurs.

Minibuses fall in between. Lower, shorter vans (below 2.4 m in height and 5.4 m in length) need the airport's prior authorisation to use the bus area, so for a dozen people in a low-roof van, ask the operator exactly where it will collect.

Executive cars meet at the escalators

A chauffeur's meeting point is baggage reclaim, where the main escalators come down; the car then loads from dedicated bays on P1 Level 4, next to the lifts. For a board member landing ahead of the delegation, that is the meeting point to send.

Commercial drivers may work only in the designated areas. Picking up from the public zone or on the yellow line is not allowed, so a quick kerbside grab is off the table.

Transfer time to the CBD

  • about 7 km by road to Victoria Square, about 10-15 min in light traffic

Terminals

  • Single terminal (domestic and international)

Using the short distance

With a light-traffic run of 10 to 15 minutes and no toll roads in South Australia, a looping shuttle between the airport and a city hotel is realistic for staggered arrivals. The CBD and North Terrace hotels sit close to the Adelaide Convention Centre on the Riverbank.

Event days at Adelaide Oval need their own plan: the Oval's car parks are closed to buses, and big event days move set-down to Pennington Terrace and King William Road.

Questions

Is a full-size coach too big for the terminal car park?

Yes. The P1 car park takes nothing taller than 2.2 m or longer than 5.4 m, so coaches go to the bus and shuttle area.

Can a delegate take public transport if they miss the group?

Yes: the J1 and J2 go direct to the city from Stop 10, Sir Richard Williams Avenue, which is two to five minutes on foot.

Can we go from the airport straight to the Barossa or the Hills?

Yes. The Barossa is about an hour from the city. Coming down from the Hills, buses follow strict South Eastern Freeway rules, low gear from Crafers and a 60 km/h limit, which the operator plans for.
