Midi coaches for mid-size groups and hotel shuttles

The midi coach sits in the middle of the range, above the minibus and below the 50-plus seaters. It suits a conference breakout group, a touring party of 30 or a hotel shuttle running a tight loop.

Why the middle size

A group of 28 in a 57-seat coach leaves half the seats empty; the same group in two minibuses needs two drivers and two timings. A midi coach keeps it to one vehicle, one pickup and one driver. Luggage room is tighter than on a 57-seater, so airport runs need a suitcase count alongside the passenger count.

On a shuttle loop between hotels and a venue, the shorter body turns and stops more easily in CBD streets, and a smaller load boards faster at each stop.

Specification

  • Seats: 25-35
  • Luggage: Underfloor or rear luggage space, smaller than a full coach

Licences and accreditation

A midi coach up to 8 t GVM is driven on a light rigid licence; a two-axle midi above that weight needs medium rigid. The operator needs bus accreditation: Long Distance, Tourist or Charter accreditation in NSW, and Safe Transport Victoria operator accreditation in Victoria. Ask for both to appear on the quote.

Midi coaches over 4.5 t GVM fall under the Heavy Vehicle National Law fatigue rules, and once the driver works beyond 100 km of base a work diary applies. On a long day tour that shapes the return time. WA and the NT use their own schemes.

Routes where a smaller coach helps

Hinterland roads on the Sunshine Coast's Blackall Range are narrow and winding, and full-size coaches need a route check. In the Illawarra, vehicles over 11 m may not use the Jamberoo approach to Illawarra Fly. A midi coach does not open every road, but it widens the choice; the operator confirms length and route before the day.

Questions

Is a midi coach enough for 35 people with luggage?

For a short hotel shuttle, yes. For an airport run with a suitcase each, check the luggage space on the quote, because a full-size coach may be needed.

Can a midi coach run a winery or day tour?

Yes, and it is a common choice for groups in the 20s and 30s. In the Hunter Valley, large groups still book cellar doors ahead.

Does a midi coach have seat belts?

Ask about the specific vehicle. The ADR 68 seatbelt rules apply to heavy buses built since July 1994, and many midi coaches fall in that group.
