Alice Springs group transfers and Red Centre logistics

The town transfers are short. The outback legs are long, governed by permits, heat rules and Northern Territory fatigue law. Get those right early and the rest follows.

Arrivals at ASP

Alice Springs Airport is about 15 km by road from Todd Mall, 15 to 20 minutes. It publishes no coach pick-up point. A vehicle may stop in front of the terminal only while attended and actively loading, and kerbside parking is prohibited, so the driver pulls in as the group comes out. The Territory does not observe daylight saving, so in summer the gap to Sydney and Melbourne time widens; check every connection in local time.

Conference programs

The convention centre on Barrett Drive takes up to about 1,200 delegates, with hotels along the same road and in the town centre. Morning loops are short; the planning is in the afternoon offsite. At the Desert Park, coaches park free, and any party of 10 or more should book through visitor services first. Standley Chasm, about 45 minutes west, belongs to and is operated by the local Arrernte community; Sunday hours are shorter.

The long legs south-west

The road distance to Uluru is about 468 km: around five hours by car and more in a coach, partly because coaches are capped at 100 km/h on the Stuart Highway even where cars may go faster. Kings Canyon is about 474 km on sealed roads. Both are usually overnight trips. The Mereenie Loop shortcut is unsealed and 4WD only; coaches take the sealed highways.

Every visitor to Uluru-Kata Tjuta needs a park pass. Operators touring the park hold a permit or licence issued by its Director, and applications need at least 14 days; anyone guiding must first complete the park's program for tour guides. For Watarrka and Tjoritja / West MacDonnell, each visitor from outside the Territory also needs a Territory parks pass.

Heat and fatigue

Heat rules move the timetable. When the forecast is 36 degrees C or hotter, Rim Walk starts at Kings Canyon close at 9am, and at Kata Tjuta the track beyond Karu Lookout shuts from 11am. Work departure times back from those cut-offs. Driver hours here fall under the Territory's work health and safety law and fatigue guidance, not the national heavy vehicle fatigue scheme used in most states.

Questions

Can we do Uluru as a day trip from Alice Springs?

Not realistically by coach. It is about 468 km each way, so plan it as an overnight with a Yulara stay.

What should we send for a West MacDonnell day?

Group size, the stops wanted (Simpsons Gap is 25 minutes out, Ormiston Gorge about 1 h 45 min), whether guiding is needed, and the latest return time.

Is the Uluru climb available?

No. The climb is permanently closed.
