Launceston Airport (LST): permits, the Commercial Lane and the north

At Launceston, buses load in the Commercial Lane, the lane nearest the terminal; its boom gate opens by reading the number plate. Permits are per vehicle and banded by seat count, so vehicle choice and paperwork go together.

Seat bands and accreditation

Each vehicle using the Commercial Lane needs its own current permit, sold on a pay-as-you-go basis and linked to the number plate. Bus permits come in three bands: small (up to 9 seats), medium (10 to 16) and large (17 or more). A booking that switches from a minibus to a coach late on also switches permit band, so confirm the final headcount early. Bus operators must also be accredited with Transport Services Tasmania.

One minute at the front

No coach staging area is published. Out front, the limit is a single attended minute. Group loading happens in the Commercial Lane, so send everyone out together once bags are in hand.

The airport lists pre-booked minibus transfer services for groups, and for a small party that is often the right size.

Transfer time to the CBD

  • about 15 km by road to Launceston Town Hall, about 15-20 min in light traffic

Terminals

  • Single passenger terminal

Town, stadium and venues

The airport is on Evandale Main Road, about 3 km from the Midland Highway. The Albert Hall on Tamar Street holds up to about 1,100 people and the Princess Theatre about 940. UTAS Stadium at York Park has reduced capacity during its 2026 upgrade works, so check event-day access for supporter groups.

Beyond Launceston

Cradle Mountain is a 2 to 2.5 hour drive. Tour operators have only three first-come parking spaces at Dove Lake and in peak periods are asked to park at the Cradle Mountain Gateway and use the park shuttle; every visitor needs a parks pass. Hobart is two and a half to three hours down the Midland Highway. Long days are scheduled around driver work and rest time; the Heavy Vehicle National Law applies in Tasmania.

Questions

We are meeting the Spirit of Tasmania at Devonport. What should we know?

Devonport is about 1.25 hours from Launceston. The service moves to new ships and a new terminal in late 2026, and parking at the terminal is reserved for passengers, so book the pickup ahead and confirm the sailing time.

Can the group walk to Cataract Gorge from the city?

Yes, about 15 minutes via Kings Bridge, which avoids the Basin car park at busy times.

What goes on the quote?

The vehicle and its seat band, the Commercial Lane pickup, the route, and any park or ferry timings.
