Hobart group transport: airport, waterfront and southern Tasmania runs

Hobart is compact and toll-free, with the airport 15 to 20 minutes away across the Tasman Bridge. The timing risks sit outside the city: mountain road closures, ferry queues and park passes.

The commercial lane at HBA

Hobart Airport is about 20 km by road from Franklin Square; the airport's own figure for the city is 17 km. Commercial vehicles pick up and set down in the boom-gated Commercial Lane, apart from the public lane, entering by access card or plate recognition. No coach staging area is published and every vehicle at the kerb must be attended, so the driver enters the lane once the group is ready. Airport staff can ask a driver for accreditation or a current Tasmanian licence.

The run to a Sullivans Cove or Salamanca hotel is short. Give the operator the flight and a contact on the ground who will be with the group at the carousel.

Waterfront and MONA

Conference groups at Wrest Point in Sandy Bay need loops from the waterfront and CBD hotels; the Hotel Grand Chancellor sits right on Sullivans Cove. MONA is easiest by ferry from Brooke Street Pier, about 30 minutes each way, with a drop-off zone directly in front of the pier. By road it is about 11 km, around 20 minutes, which lets the coach set down at the pier and collect at MONA for the next leg.

Mountain, peninsula and island

Pinnacle Road up kunanyi / Mount Wellington is sealed but narrow and winding, with limited parking at The Springs and the summit. It can close at any time for snow and ice, most often April to September, and during snow closures only the one licensed shuttle operator may take visitors up. Keep a second option on the run sheet.

Richmond is about 25 minutes; Port Arthur about 90. Bruny Island needs the Kettering ferry, about 40 minutes from Hobart plus a 20-minute crossing, and tickets are for the next available sailing, so budget queue time. Every guest entering a Tasmanian national park needs a parks pass, and a commercial tour needs a Nature-Based Tourism licence.

Questions

Do we need a toll tag in Tasmania?

No. There are no toll roads in the state.

Can a Hobart group connect with the Spirit of Tasmania?

Devonport is about 3.5 hours north by road. Its ships change in late 2026; check the sailing first, then time the transfer to it.

Is Freycinet a day trip from Hobart?

Coles Bay is about 2.75 hours each way. That makes a long day that must fit the driver's hours; weigh an overnight on the east coast.
