Hobart Airport (HBA): the Commercial Lane and the bridge

Hobart Airport keeps commercial vehicles apart from private cars in a boom-gated Commercial Lane. A group vehicle gets through that gate only if its operator already meets the airport's access terms, which is the first thing to confirm when you book.

Access arranged in advance

Every commercial vehicle has to meet Hobart Airport's Terms and Conditions of Access. Entry to the Commercial Lane is by access card or licence-plate recognition, and access fees apply. Operators starting work at the airport contact its commercial team for the requirements. Drivers must show their driver accreditation or a current Tasmanian licence when airport staff or security ask.

No coach staging area is published. Any vehicle stopped at the kerb needs someone with it the whole time, and unattended ones are fined and may be towed. Time the vehicle to the group being ready.

Across the Tasman Bridge

The run to Franklin Square follows a dual-lane highway and crosses the Tasman Bridge. The airport quotes 17 km to the city; the road figure to Franklin Square is about 20 km. Tasmania has no toll roads. For waterfront hotels around Sullivans Cove and conference venues such as Wrest Point in Sandy Bay, send the exact entrance the venue wants coaches to use.

Transfer time to the CBD

  • about 20 km by road to Franklin Square (the airport puts the city 17 km away), about 15-20 min on the dual-lane highway

Terminals

  • Single passenger terminal

Straight from the plane into a program

Touring groups often go from the airport to a first stop rather than a hotel. Richmond is about 25 minutes from Hobart and Port Arthur about an hour and a half. Tasmania's national parks require a parks pass for every visitor, and commercial tours need a Nature-Based Tourism licence, so check who holds it when a park is on day one.

Groups crossing on the Spirit of Tasmania land at Devonport, about three and a half hours north by road. Late 2026 brings new ships and a new Devonport terminal, so confirm sailing times before timing a transfer around one.

Questions

Can a latecomer follow on public transport?

An airport express bus meets major scheduled flights at Gate 1, outside the arrivals hall forecourt, and takes about 30 minutes to central Hobart.

Can the coach go up kunanyi / Mount Wellington?

Pinnacle Road is a sealed road, but it is narrow and twisting, summit parking is scarce, and snow or ice can shut it, most often between April and September. The operator confirms on the day.

What should the request include?

Flight details, headcount and bags, the first destination, and any park or ferry on the itinerary, so the quote covers permits and timings.
