Townsville group transfers: airport, stadium and island ferries

Townsville is compact: the airport is about 10 to 15 minutes from Flinders Street. The logistics that need planning are stadium bus zones, ferry connections and which outlying roads a coach can use.

Arrivals at Garbutt

Townsville Airport (TSV) is about 9 km by road from the city centre. No coach pick-up point is published; groups are collected in the signed public zone outside the terminal, the driver stays with the vehicle, and stopping anywhere else can draw an infringement notice. A free 30-minute holding area a few minutes away is where a driver waits for the call. Its car parks are built for cars and other light vehicles, not buses.

Send the flight numbers and the name of one contact with a phone. That person calls the driver once bags are collected, and the vehicle comes round from the holding area.

Delegates and teams in the city

The convention centre on Entertainment Drive seats about 1,770 in convention mode and takes banquets of 800. For a conference dinner, stagger return runs to the Strand and Palmer Street hotels rather than sending one departure at the end.

Stadium bus zones

The stadium at Railway Estate gives buses two options, split by size. Vehicles of 22 seats or fewer use the Dean Street car park for set-down and collection: the entry is off Rooney Street, it is roughly 500 m to Gate A, and nothing needs reserving. Anything bigger goes to the charter bus zone, around 400 m from Gate A on Dean Street's Central Park side, and that space must be reserved. On major event days the precinct has no public parking, so without the reservation there is nowhere to wait.

Island and outback runs

Most groups cross to Magnetic Island on the passenger ferry from the Breakwater, about 20 minutes, and use island transport. Taking a vehicle across on the Ross Street ferry needs a booking, confirmed with the ferry operator.

Billabong Sanctuary is 20 minutes south and Charters Towers an hour and a half or more inland. The access road to Wallaman Falls is signed unsuitable for buses. Mount Spec Road to Paluma is narrow and steep, and sources conflict on whether buses belong on it; the operator decides the vehicle and checks conditions on the day. Reef HQ is closed for a rebuild.

Questions

Can we book a Townsville to Cairns transfer?

Yes. At about 350 km, the timetable has to respect national heavy vehicle limits on driving and rest. Send the timings and the operator plans the breaks.

Where does a team bus wait at the stadium?

A bus of up to 22 seats uses the Dean Street car park with no booking. A larger coach needs a booked space in the charter bus zone.

Is Castle Hill open to coaches?

Yes. Coaches can park at the summit lookout. The access road was shut for slope stabilisation and reopened in October 2025.
