Bus Rentals in Australia & New Zealand

Day tours planned against the driver's clock

Every day tour shares one constraint: the vehicle must be back before the driver's hours run out. Fix the furthest point first, then fill the day around it.

How far one day reaches

The Heavy Vehicle National Law limit on a bus driver's work covers the whole day, from the depot back to the depot. From Melbourne, the Twelve Apostles are about three hours each way inland and longer on the Great Ocean Road, so the coast in both directions will not fit; go out on the coast and back inland, or stay a night. From Sydney, the Blue Mountains are under two hours. From Hobart, Port Arthur is about 90 minutes.

In WA and the NT a different fatigue regime governs the roster. From Darwin, Kakadu is about three hours each way and Litchfield about 90 minutes. Uluru from Alice Springs is an overnight trip, not a day.

Sites that need a booking or a permit

The new Twelve Apostles visitor centre is due to open in October 2026, and once it opens, a booking is compulsory for anyone entering the main precinct. Coaches that book receive a bus bay and a set arrival time, so build the day around that slot.

Guided tours in national parks need a licensed operator. In Queensland, transport alone without guiding is treated differently, so say whether the group brings its own guide. Bus set-downs in the Echo Point roundabout at Katoomba are prohibited and camera-checked. Near Cairns, Skyrail and the Kuranda Scenic Railway split the journey, one up and one down, so the coach drops at one terminal and collects the group at the other.

Regulations that apply

  • NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service licenses operators who run guided tours in NSW national parks through its Parks Eco Pass program
  • Under HVNL standard hours, bus drivers working beyond a 100 km radius of their base must keep a work diary

Snow, heat and closures

Victorian alpine runs need a driver holding a Hazardous Area Authority and a bus carrying approved chains and chocks. In the Top End, the wet season closes parts of Kakadu, and the park publishes a daily access report. Blue Mountains roads and walks can close for bushfire danger or storms. Check conditions that morning and settle a backup stop when you book.

Questions

Can we do the Great Ocean Road and the Twelve Apostles in one day?

From Melbourne, only if one direction runs inland. The coast road both ways is too long for one driver's day; stay overnight at Lorne or Port Campbell instead.

Do we need a guide as well as a driver?

For interpretation inside national parks, the tour operator needs the right licence or permit. A driver moving the group between sites is a different arrangement, so say what the day includes.

What happens if a site closes on the day?

Roads, parks and walks close for weather, fire danger and repairs. Name a fallback stop in advance so the driver can switch without rebooking.
