Moving Cruise Groups Through Circular Quay and White Bay

Neither of Sydney's cruise terminals gives a vehicle time to sit at the kerb. Transfers here run to a timetable set by when the ship releases passengers.

Confirm the terminal before anything else

The Overseas Passenger Terminal sits at Circular Quay West, beside the Harbour Bridge. White Bay Cruise Terminal is in Balmain. Get the terminal name from the booking documents or the cruise line before the job is set; the approach roads have nothing in common.

Ship days mean zero parking at the Overseas Passenger Terminal, and nowhere for a coach to idle while passengers clear the ship. Set-down happens on the lower roadway, entered from George Street at Argyle Street, with a two-minute limit and the driver staying at the wheel. For arrivals, port ground staff direct passengers holding a coach booking to a dedicated pick-up point.

White Bay access on ship days

The single ship-day way in is James Craig Road, turning off The Crescent. A driver who heads down Robert Street in Balmain is turned back, which costs time the group does not have. The terminal car park caps short stays at 15 minutes and the kerb at two, so the coach should roll in when the group is ready to load.

Connecting airports

Terminals

  • White Bay Cruise Terminal (WBCT), Balmain, opened in April 2013; it uses berths 4 and 5 and parts of berths 3 and 6
  • Overseas Passenger Terminal (OPT), Circular Quay West, The Rocks, beside the Sydney Harbour Bridge and opposite the Sydney Opera House
  • Both terminals are run by the Port Authority of NSW

Building the timetable

Disembarkation at the Overseas Passenger Terminal usually starts about half an hour after the ship arrives. Book the pick-up for a realistic release time, then leave a buffer for luggage. For embarkation, the port wants passengers at the terminal an hour or more before sailing; count backwards from that, adding the drive time listed alongside.

For a flight connection, the airport side has its own rules: registered coaches collect arriving passengers only from the Ground Transport Zones and hold off-terminal at the airport's Bus Holding Area, Ross Smith Avenue, until called. Send flight numbers and the ship name together so both ends are planned as one movement.

Questions

Can a coach wait outside the Overseas Passenger Terminal until our group is through?

No. There are no waiting bays, and stops on the drop-off roadway are capped at two minutes. The operator times the arrival to the group's release.

Is there a train option for part of the group?

Yes. Direct airport trains leave Circular Quay station, roughly 450 m from the terminal door.

What should we send with the request?

Ship, terminal, sailing date, passenger count, bag count and any flight numbers. The quote then states vehicle size, pick-up point and timing.
