Vivid Sydney 2027: Evening Transport for Groups

Vivid Sydney 2027 lasts 23 nights, Friday 28 May through Saturday 19 June, with sites from Circular Quay and The Rocks to the Opera House, Barangaroo and Darling Harbour, plus other city locations. The festival is at night, the roads close, and group movements have to fit around both.

What the 2026 festival did to the roads

In 2026, the harbour-side road closures ran from 3 pm until 1 am, with buses rerouted and stops moved. Trains ran through Circular Quay without stopping between 6 pm and 11 pm on Saturdays, and Wynyard took those passengers instead. Buses that would normally serve Circular Quay were shifted to Martin Place, roughly 1.1 km off, from 6 pm on Fridays and from 5 pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

Use 2026 as a guide only, and confirm the 2027 closures once they are published before fixing times. The 2027 dates were pushed a little later than normal so the festival spans the June public holiday.

Staging the coach

The City of Sydney offers coaches no long-stay kerbside layover in the centre. Charter coaches can stage at the King Street Wharf layover, with its entry off Lime Street: 55 bays, open to coaches accredited in NSW for long-distance, tourist or charter work, with number plates registered beforehand. Passengers cannot be picked up or dropped off inside it, so the coach waits there and moves to a set-down point when called.

Set-down points on a Vivid night depend on the closures in force. The operator picks them and gives the group leader a walking route to the viewing area.

Operating notes

  • During Vivid Sydney 2026, roads around the harbour were closed from 3 pm to 1 am, and buses used different routes and stops.
  • In 2026, buses that normally use Circular Quay moved to Martin Place (about 1.1 km away) from 6 pm on Fridays and 5 pm at weekends.
  • Public transport fares apply as normal during the festival.
  • The 2027 dates move slightly later than usual to line up with the June public holiday.
  • In 2026, trains did not stop at Circular Quay from 6 pm to 11 pm on Saturday nights; passengers used Wynyard station instead.
  • The King Street Wharf coach layover (entry from Lime Street, 55 bays) is for NSW-accredited long-distance, tourist and charter coaches, which register their vehicles in advance.

A timetable that holds

Most groups want dinner and a walk through the lights. Fix one departure time from a named point, send it to every guest in writing, and add a second collection for anyone who stays late. Crowds make headcounts slower than on a normal evening.

Questions

Can the coach wait near Circular Quay during Vivid?

Not on the street. Accredited charter coaches wait at the King Street Wharf layover and are called forward for the pick-up.

Do fares change during the festival?

No. Public transport fares applied as normal in 2026.

How early should we book?

As soon as the date is fixed, with guest numbers and the dinner venue. Staging at King Street Wharf needs the coach registered in advance.
